JOB TITLE: BIG Futures Family/Community Outreach Coordinator

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lorain County, (BBBSLC) Ohio is seeking a Family/Community Outreach Coordinator to help support it’s BIG Futures career- and college-focused volunteer mentoring, and community support program.  This two-year grant-funded program by the Ohio Department of Education, will provide high school students facing adversity with career- and college-focused evidence-based volunteer mentoring, academic tutoring, social and emotional and career readiness learning, and career-related experiences and activities – all with the aim of helping mentees achieve success after high school. Students to be served include ninth through twelfth graders and one year past graduation at Elyria High School, Lorain High School, Columbia High School, Wellington High School, and the Lorain County Joint Vocational School.   


FUNCTION

Under the supervision of the Director of Programs, the Family/Community Outreach Coordinator works closely with the CEO, Director of Programs, Academic Services Coordinator, Match Support Specialists, Tutors, Community Partners, and School Representatives to assist with mentor and mentee recruitment, site coordination, leveraging of community experiences and resources, and coordination and integration among youth, parents, mentors, instructors, and others.      


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with school representatives to establish BIG Futures program weekly schedules, locations, and supports at each of the five school sites for about 160 students.  (Schedules include two 90-minute after-school sessions per week; Monday through Friday after-school tutoring/counseling availability; mentor interaction 3-5 hours per month; various community-based career activities) 

  • Oversees the daily operations of the after-school programs, including instruction, tutoring and homework assistance, and academic and career enrichment programming.  

  • Works with school representatives to identify and recruit students for the program through teacher and guidance counselor referrals, parent/teacher conferences, orientation programs, other agency referrals, and more.  

  • Identifies and works with community partners in education, business, manufacturing, healthcare, safety services, labor and the trades and more to identify and recruit career mentors and develop career experiences and activities. 

  • Serves as the primary liaison among and between BBBSLC, community partners and schools. 

  • Using a community outreach approach, cultivate mutually valuable, intensive and comprehensive working relationships with areas education institutions, businesses, manufacturers, labor/trades, healthcare, and safety services to improve their collaboration with and employment of BBBSLC mentees.     

  • Works with Match Support Specialists to identify appropriate career mentors with mentees.      

  • Assists the CEO and the Program Director in developing, coordinating and executing community-based enrichment activities like team building, career fairs, employee tours, campus tours, campus specific career deep-dive activities and more.

  • Arranges transportation for students who needs transport from school sites to home, or to community-based activities and outings. 

  • Works with BIG Futures program staff to ensure program participants complete program milestones including Career and Interest Assessment, Individualized Career Plan, Receives a Mentor Match, 14-week Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum, Job Readiness Skills Assessment with Tutoring Interventions as Necessary, Local Employment Trends and Opportunity Education, Career and College Exposure Activities.     

  • With the Match Support Specialists, tracks attendance and program progress using BBBSLC Match Support surveys, questionnaires, and other tools.  

  • Provide mentoring matches with information and resources for affordable and career-appropriate activity ideas and encourage involvement in BBBSLC and partner organized events.   

  • Recognize individual and community partner achievements through individualized recognition and group events.       

  • Communicate effectively with BIG Futures program staff and partners including prompt notification and consultation regarding concerns which may negatively impact the match and instructor relationships. 

  • Serve as an agency and brand ambassador of the mission of BBBSLC to the community at-large.         


SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

  • Industrious, self-motivated, energetic and results driven.  

  • Strong interpersonal and people skills, and the ability to relate to everyone from company presidents to floor-level workers.  

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills reflecting solid customer service and the ability to operate at a high level in a multi-cultural environment.  

  • Demonstrated experience in recruiting, performance management, and developing and retaining mentors and mentees.  

  • Strong project management skills managing complex projects resulting in measurable success and program and client growth.  

  • Broad understanding of employment trends and education and training opportunities in Lorain County and the ability to leverage relationships to create opportunities for BBBSLC clients.  

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality throughout daily operations and communications.

  • Flexibility in working in team and individual environments, including the ability to effectively collaborate with other BBBSLC program staff and community and school partners.

  • Ability to use time effectively, focus on details, collect meaningful data and draw solid conclusions to inform the program.  

  • Highly organized, with the ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment with experience managing multiple deadlines and dynamic priorities.  

  • Must be willing to submit to a criminal and motor vehicle background check.     


EDUCATION

  • Must hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s Degree preferred

  • Preferred degree: Masters in Social Work and LISW credential or a Master’s in Education 

  • Other field to be considered include: Business Administration 


PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE 

  • At least 7 or more years of experience with a minimum of at least 3 years in a program supervisory role.

  • Experience in case management necessary (strong educational background will be considered).

  • Demonstrated experience in social service delivery working with children and families and building community partnerships. 

  • Demonstrated experience working with workforce development partners. 

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a car as needed.   


COMPENSATION/BENEFITS/BACKGROUND CHECK

This is a fulltime contract position over two years at $48,880.00 annually.  A full background check is required prior to employment.
