JOB TITLE:  Academic Success Tutor

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:   None

FLSA Status: Exempt; Part-time, 10 hours per week

FUNCTION

The BBBSLC Academic Success Tutor is part of the Pathways to Success Program, providing one-to-one and small group (2-3 students) tutoring services to eligible youth ages 6-18.  Subjects shall always include math, reading comprehension and vocabulary, but shall also include other subject matters as identified by students.  Additionally, the Academic Success Tutor shall provide mentoring services to youth to enhance their academic achievements, provide other social/emotional supports and/or recreational activities.

 JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences.

  • Use active listening strategies to allow student to determine content and pace of tutoring Reviewing classroom or curricula topics and assignments.

  • Utilize listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method to diagnose student needs and monitor progress.

  • Work with students to help them understand key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom.

  • Demonstrate academic best practices for specific subjects and assignments, including math, reading comprehension and vocabulary.

  • Provide Mentoring to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills and approaches to answering test questions.

  • Developing and distributing homework assignments and parent involvement assignments.

  • Provide students with positive and constructive feedback

  • Offering feedback on progress to students' parents and teachers where appropriate

  • Recognize the different learning styles and student preferences.

  • Be direct and kind with students at the same time.

  • Document and monitor all elements of service provision in a timely fashion, meeting BBBSA and agency standards.

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, including prompt notification and consultation regarding concerns which may negatively impact the match.

  • Assist with other program and/or organization activities as needed.

  • Must be willing to submit to criminal and motor vehicle background check.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Level I: ($12.00 - $15.00) Peer Tutors will provide one-on-one or small group tutoring with the support of the Academic Services Coordinator and experienced tutors. Qualifications: College-bound high school junior or senior and has a recommendation from school faculty.  Access to own transportation is a plus.

Level II: ($14.00 - $18.00) Level II tutors are high school graduates who are currently enrolled in a 2-year or 4-year college or university.  Level II tutors apply learning styles and teaching methodology to guide students to higher levels of comprehension. Work is performed under general supervision of the Academic Services Coordinator.

Level III Tutor: ($16.00 - $24.95) Level III tutors minimally have a bachelor’s degree and can be current graduates or retired professionals.  The duties include all of those listed above. In addition, tutors at this level with have some responsibility to mentor youth and support the planning and/or execution of tutor trainings and/or workshops.

Tutors who are also willing to provide 3-5 hours of monthly volunteer mentoring will qualify for a higher pay tier by category.  

Must have dependable transportation, an Ohio driver’s license, and meet the minimum required limit of liability insurance as established by the state of Ohio.  Proficiency with Microsoft Office software.  Flexible schedule, with availability to work weekday evenings and weekends - Flexibility to work with diverse populations.
