VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful mentorship matches between volunteers and children ages 6-18. We then provide the training, resources and support necessary for those matches to succeed.

TRADITIONAL ONE-TO-ONE MENTORING

A Big is matched with a Little ages 6-14 with the commitment to see each other once per month for a couple hours. Matches spend time together in the local community and plan their own outings, based on activities they like to do, such as playing catch, reading books, or getting ice cream.

THE EXPERIENCE

Traditional one-to-one mentoring. Volunteers are matched with children ages 6 to 16. Matches plan activities once a month based on their own schedule.

Big Couples

The Big Couple program is our traditional mentoring program with a twist. One couple (two adults) are matched with one child to build a life-changing friendship. Big Couples are matched with a Little Brother between the ages of 6 and 16, spending time with him together or on their own. This program allows ultimate flexibility for couples juggling work and other commitments.

Two adults age 18 or older in a relationship for 2+ years 

CHILDREN

Children 6 -14

THE EXPERIENCE

Two volunteers are matched with a Little Brother age 6 to 16. Big Couples spend time with the child once a month together or on their own. Outings are scheduled at your convenience.

HIGH SCHOOL BIGS

In this one-to-one peer mentoring program, teens in grades 9 through 12 serve as mentors to an elementary school student. The program is facilitated by a Big Brothers Big Sisters team member and has a curriculum designed specifically for peer-to-peer mentoring.  Topics include academic achievement, bullying, self esteem and relationship building blocks.

THE EXPERIENCE

High school volunteers are matched with elementary school students. Mentoring sessions take place once a week after school at the elementary school or partner site and are led by a Big Brothers Big Sisters program specialist.

Lunch Buddies

Lunch Buddies is a program in which a mentor is matched with an elementary school student to eat lunch once a week during the child's lunch period. This volunteer opportunity is perfect for the busy business professional who may have a flexible work environment and does not want to commit to volunteering on weekends or evenings. This program also works well for college students, retirees, stay-at-home individuals or high school volunteers.

Bigs in Blue

Bigs in Blue is a one-to-one mentoring program that connects youth with police in communities throughout Lorain County, building strong, trusting, lasting relationships. These relationships can help build stronger bonds between law enforcement and the families they serve.

VOLUNTEER

Adults age 18 or older. Bigs who mentor children can come from various backgrounds and can be (active, retired or training to be a police officer) or civilian volunteers.

Titan WORKPLACE MENTORING

Our Workplace Mentoring program brings high school students to a partner corporation’s company headquarters. Employees are matched one-to-one with students and meet once a month in a group setting. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides the transportation and facilitates the sessions.  This program provides the opportunity for youth to experience careers and professions they may not have even known were possibilities.  A tailored curriculum focuses on career exploration, relationship building and college readiness with a unique spin based on the partner organization.

VOLUNTEER

Corporate employees age 18 or older at a participating Workplace Mentoring company.

Children

Children 13 -16

THE EXPERIENCE

Employees are matched with high school students and meet once a month at company headquarters. Sessions last 60 minutes and are facilitated by a Big Brothers Big Sisters program specialist.

Elyria Teens Achieve Success 

Elyria Teen Achieve Success is a teen mentoring youth program for 9th and 10th-grade students to assist them in transitioning into high school and preparing for the 21st Century careers. The program works to cultivate leadership through giving teens the opportunity to grab a hand and pull others forward by encouraging them to excel and succeed in academics and in life.

Volunteers are matched with children in the 9th and 10th grade. Mentoring takes place at a school or partner site.
