What: Big Brothers Big Sisters, the nation’s largest mentoring network, has organized a ‘Bigs on the Hill Rally’ recognizing Congress for passing legislation to fund Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention National Mentoring Grants. Big Brothers Big Sisters received $13.3 Million in federal mentoring grant support for fiscal year 2011. The funding, aimed to reduce juvenile delinquency, allows Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates across the nation to carefully match more children who face adversity in long-term, staff supported, volunteer mentoring relationships. The Bigs on the Hill Rally is part of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America’s National Leadership Summit, which will take place June 12-13 in Washington D.C.

Why: The Bigs on the Hill Rally will focus on why mentoring matters for children, families and communities in the U.S. Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring is backed by longstanding and real-time data showing the program’s effectiveness in helping youth overcome adversity to improve in school, avoid risky/delinquent behaviors and achieve higher self-esteem and aspirations. The organization serves more than 630,000 children, parents and volunteers through full-service long-term, staff-supported mentoring programs. Donations and grants fund careful mentor matching and ongoing staff-support and guidance to achieve mentoring safety and longevity, a key to quality mentoring and successful outcomes. Big Brothers Big Sisters serves children of single, low-income or incarcerated parents; sons and daughters of military personnel and children who face other forms of adversity.

Who: Bigs on the Hill Rally participants will include members of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring community – national and local mentoring agency leaders, staff, board members, mentors, mentees, families, partners schools, donors and others who believe long-term mentoring is a wise investment that prepares children to become productive, taxpaying adults.
