Give your child the gift of a mentor --- and a new friend.
If your child is age 6-14 and lives in Lorain County then he or she is eligible to become a Little Brother or Little Sister. We continue to support the match until your child turns 18.
You get to decide the type of Big Brother or Sister that will work best for your child.
You let us know your preferences, and then our clinically-trained staff look at your child’s interests, personality, and activities to select a potential Big Brother or Sister. Once the staff finds a potential mentor for your child, they get your approval before arranging the match.
To qualify for our program a child must:
* Be 6 through 14 years of age
* Have a need for an adult friend to offer guidance and support
* Be available to meet with a Big 2-4 times per month for at least 6 months
* Want to have a Big Brother or Big Sister
Your child's safety is very important to us.
We conduct a thorough background check on every volunteer in our programs and every match is regularly reviewed by a professionally trained Program Specialist.
Volunteers must:
* Submit an application, including three references
* Receive a fingerprint clearance card
* Complete an in-person interview
* Clear a driving record check
* Be at least 18 years old (unless part of our High School program)
Program Information
Our program is offered free of charge, however for events that your child participates in with his or her Big, we ask that you pay your child's way (ie: movie tickets, zoo entrance fee etc).
Waiting Period
Big Brothers Big Sisters is in constant need of more volunteers, especially Big Brothers. Due to this, most of the boys referred to our program will be placed on a waiting list. Though we hope the time they wait is short, it can be a year or more. Girls generally do not have to be placed on the waiting list.
