Check out the Bigs Only section to find out about match activities, and learn about valuable local resources. Bigs Only

Each one of us remembers someone special - a neighbor, teacher, relative, or friend - who broadened our horizons and brought a little magic into our lives. Maybe it was the person who taught you to throw a baseball or ride a bike, or maybe it was someone who helped you make the right decision when you needed guidance.
Sharing every day experiences with a child is the premise on which Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lorain County is built. We've been transforming lives for over a decade, and we've developed several successful and proven programs to help you make a BIG difference in the life of a child.
Becoming a Big is a fun and easy way to volunteer in the community. We have several program options to fit your schedule and interests. We also provide Bigs and Littles with a variety of agency planned activities like halloween walks, hiking adventures at any of our metro parks, and tickets to Browns games. In this section, you'll learn about the different program options that we offer, the application process, and what you can expect once you become a Big.
In 1997, the introduction of our Site-Based Mentoring Program allowed for a whole new group of potential mentors to experience the fun of becoming a volunteer...High School Juniors and Seniors! High School “Bigs” are matched with elementary school students to provide a mentor and special friend. Volunteers, like you, have a lot to offer a child! Since you are still a student yourself, you can relate to a “Little” in a special way. You can remember what it was like to be your Little’s age, since it was not so long ago, yet you’re old enough to give them someone to look up to and admire. Our “Littles” love that “one of the big kids” wants to take time out to spend with them and your friendship can really help to build their confidence and self esteem!
What is a High School Big?
2. Schedule a Volunteer Interview - When our Customer Service Staff contacts you, they will answer any questions you might have and discuss volunteering as a Big. If you are ready to take the next step, we will schedule a volunteer interview for you. The interview will give us a chance to learn about your interests, hobbies, goals and experiences so we can match you with a Little that’s a perfect fit! In order to ensure the safety of our children and volunteers, a finger print and background check is required. The agency spends $25.00 per volunteer to process background checks. Donations are highly appreciated to offset costs and ensure longer, stronger and safer matches. Donations are tax deductible.
3. Matching. When we are ready to match you, we will review the kids in our program and find the best fit for you. Depending on your gender and the kind of child you'd like to work with, matching may go very quickly or take some time. Making the right match is important to our commitment to form lasting relationships. Once we make the match, a member of our professional staff will introduce you to your new friend and start your relationship on its way!
